Turm Restaurant: Eating Above Vienna
The Turm Restaurant is located inside the Donauturm. The Donauturm, or Danube Tower, was built in 1964 as part of Vienna’s international horticultural exhibition, and remains the tallest structure in Austria at 252 meters. Designed primarily by architect Hannes Lintl, with contributions from Robert Krapfenbauer, the tower was a modernist symbol of postwar optimism – clean lines, cutting-edge technology, and a focus on functionality over ornamentation.
Originally, the tower was conceived as a broadcasting tower with an observation deck and included rotating restaurants. The idea was to give visitors not just a view of the city, but an experience that celebrated Vienna’s blend of innovation and tradition.
During the 2010s, the Donauturm underwent significant modernization, including the complete refurbishment of its express elevators in 2010 and a comprehensive redesign of the restaurant interiors in 2018. Today, it retains that mid-century optimism while embracing contemporary hospitality. The movement of the dining room is almost imperceptible, but by the time your course arrives, your entire view has shifted – without you lifting a finger.
The surrounding Donaupark offers a tranquil contrast to the busy inner city, with wide lawns, sculpture gardens, and quiet paths. It’s a remnant of the 1964 exhibition grounds, thoughtfully preserved as a park, and while its large size generally offers a spacious experience compared to the inner city, it can become busy, particularly during peak seasons or near popular attractions. This setting makes the Donauturm feel surprisingly serene for such a major structure.
Dining at Turm Restaurant is a reflection of Vienna itself: graceful, thoughtful, rooted in history yet reaching upward. It’s one of the few places where you can take in nearly the whole city with one slow, elegant spin – and taste a refined version of Austria while you do it.
