The Elegant Charm of Café Sacher Bel Étage
The Café Sacher Bel Étage, located within Vienna’s historic Hotel Sacher, offers an opulent setting to experience traditional Viennese coffeehouse culture.
The story of Café Sacher begins in 1832 when Franz Sacher, a 16-year-old apprentice chef, was tasked with creating a special dessert for Prince Metternich. The result was the Sachertorte, a rich chocolate cake with apricot jam, which would later become an Austrian culinary icon. As Café Sacher’s popularity grew, so did the demand for a more exclusive and relaxed setting. The upper floor of the hotel, once reserved for private events and gatherings, was transformed into what is now known as Café Sacher Bel Étage. Designed to provide a more intimate and elegant alternative to the ground-floor café, it retained the historic charm of the Sacher legacy while offering a quieter, more spacious atmosphere.

Today, Café Sacher Bel Étage continues to uphold Vienna’s coffeehouse tradition, offering a luxurious setting for enjoying classic Austrian pastries, coffee specialties, and, of course, the Original Sacher-Torte. While times have changed, the experience remains timeless.
