Donauturm – Vienna’s Highest Viewing Point
The Donauturm (Danube Tower) was built in 1964 as part of Vienna’s International Garden Show and was designed by Austrian architect Hannes Lintl. The tower was meant to symbolize Vienna’s modernization and innovation during the post-war period. Standing at 252 meters, it was a technical marvel at the time and remains one of the tallest towers in Europe.
Its construction took just 18 months, and it has since become a landmark of the city. The high-speed elevators were cutting-edge when they were installed, and they still provide visitors with a thrilling ride to the top in just 35 seconds.

The Donauturm features two revolving restaurants: the Turm Restaurant and the Turm Café, located at 170 meters and 160 meters respectively. Over the years, they’ve served countless locals and tourists, often hosting special events, romantic dinners, and even weddings.
The outdoor observation deck, located just above the restaurants, offers unobstructed views of Vienna, the Danube, and the surrounding region. On clear days, visitors can see as far as the Schneeberg, a mountain about 100 kilometers away. For those seeking adventure, the tower also offers bungee jumping, attracting adrenaline junkies from around the world.

Beyond its architectural and recreational appeal, the Donauturm has become a symbol of Vienna’s progress and its connection to nature, thanks to its location in the Donaupark. This park was itself part of the International Garden Show and remains a peaceful escape in the bustling city.
