Gasthaus Pöschl: A Tradition of Good Taste
Gasthaus Pöschl isn’t one of those grand, centuries-old institutions you’ll find on postcards – but in a way, that’s precisely its charm. It represents a different kind of Viennese tradition: the lived-in, beloved neighborhood Gasthaus that locals return to again and again. Its roots may not stretch back to the monarchy, but its cultural relevance today feels just as strong.
The story begins with a transformation. In 1999, the space was taken over and reimagined by Austrian actor and restaurateur Hanno Pöschl, a man with deep ties to Vienna’s creative scene. His vision was simple but smart: bring back the honest flavors of Austrian cuisine, serve them without pretension, and do so in a setting that feels authentic, lively, and subtly stylish.

What came to life was a Gasthaus that does exactly that. The building itself once housed Gasthaus Immervoll (opened 1970), a popular student tavern close to the Musikverein and Secession. While the décor has evolved, you can still feel echoes of its past. It remains a place where conversations linger over glasses of Grüner Veltliner and the clatter of forks is matched by the hum of animated voices.
Pöschl’s approach to hospitality feels instinctively Viennese, but without the stiffness that sometimes haunts more formal establishments. You’ll find traditional dishes, but they’re cooked with a careful hand and an understanding of balance.
The crowd is part of the story, too. Over the years, it’s become a magnet for an eclectic mix: artists, actors, writers, architects, academics, and locals of all ages who appreciate substance over spectacle. It’s not uncommon to spot a well-known face tucked in a corner booth, enjoying a quiet lunch or late dinner.
Today, Gasthaus Pöschl holds its place as a fixture in Vienna’s inner circle of beloved eateries.
