Motto am Fluss – Vienna’s Stylish Riverside Dining Spot
Motto am Fluss opened in 2010, but its roots lie deeper in Vienna’s urban evolution. Its name connects it to the original Motto restaurant brand, a long-time fixture in the city’s creative scene. The building was part of a city effort to revitalize the Donaukanal and make it more than just a bypass waterway. Inspired by the sleek curves and minimalism of 1960s passenger ships, the architecture deliberately contrasts with the canal’s rougher, graffiti-laced aesthetic, creating a dialogue between raw and refined.
The concept was to create a place where city life could meet the river – literally. The café upstairs, with its all-day menu and lounge vibe, serves everyone from business professionals to curious tourists. Downstairs, the restaurant elevates the culinary approach while keeping things casual enough to attract a diverse crowd.

Over the years, Motto am Fluss has evolved with Vienna itself. As the city grew more confident in its creative identity, so too did this spot. The kitchen embraced more vegetarian and plant-based options. The clientele shifted from older society types to younger creatives and international visitors. Yet it never chased trends. It simply offered a thoughtful space to eat and drink well, with good light and good views. Since its opening, Motto am Fluss has gained a reputation for its diversity, high-quality food, stunning views, and relaxed yet stylish atmosphere.
