Neuer Markt is a historic square in the heart of Vienna’s First District, just a short walk from the Albertina and Kärntner Straße. First documented in 1234 as novum forum (“New Market”) and later known as the Mehlmarkt (“Flour Market”) for its grain and flour trade, it has clear medieval roots. At its center stands the Baroque Donnerbrunnen (Donner Fountain) by Georg Raphael Donner, commissioned in 1737 and completed in 1739 – with Providentia surrounded by the tributaries Traun, Enns, Ybbs, and March.

In September 2022, the square was redesigned into a largely pedestrian-friendly plaza with new stone paving, more seating, trees and green areas, and subtle water features; the Donnerbrunnen was restored, and an underground garage was built beneath the square.

Beneath the surface lies the Capuchin Crypt, the Habsburg burial site. Founded in 1618 at the Capuchin Church on Neuer Markt, it is the principal resting place of the dynasty, with over 140 interments including Maria Theresa, Franz Joseph I, and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi).

Muvamo Opinion

Neuer Markt isn’t one of the most famous squares in Vienna, and that’s exactly part of its charm. It feels more local, more relaxed, and definitely less crowded than nearby hotspots like Stephansplatz or Michaelerplatz. You don’t get the usual noise and rush of tour groups here. After a long renovation, the square looks cleaner, brighter, and more polished – and as a result, more people are beginning to discover it.

One of the nicest things to do here is simply sit by the Donner Fountain, a beautiful baroque piece that adds a strong visual presence. It’s surrounded by a mix of buildings that reflect different eras of Viennese history. The cafés and restaurants around the square are a real highlight. Some serve classic Austrian dishes in traditional settings, while others are more contemporary in both design and menu. Either way, it’s easy to settle into a corner table, order a coffee or a glass of wine, and watch the city drift past.

There’s also a bit of a surprise for history lovers: the entrance to the Capuchin Crypt. You might walk right past it without noticing, but below the beneath the Capuchin Church, lies the burial place of the Habsburg family – including Maria Theresa, Franz Joseph I, and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi). It adds a sense of quiet significance to a place that might otherwise seem purely elegant and modern on the surface.

Neuer Markt is a great spot for travelers who enjoy stylish but understated places, with a mix of culture, history, and good food. It’s not yet overrun with visitors, which makes now a great time to explore it. You get a more authentic feeling of the city while still being just steps away from the main sights.

Gastronomic Discoveries

  • Grab a seat at one of the cafés or restaurants directly on the square for a relaxed meal with a view of the fountain.

Hidden Gems

  • The entrance to the Capuchin Crypt is at the back of the church, not immediately obvious. Don’t miss the tomb of Empress Elisabeth (“Sisi”). You can book your ticket here.

Capuchin Crypt

The Capuchin Crypt beneath Neuer Markt is the final resting place of the Habsburg dynasty, including Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph, and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi). Ornate sarcophagi and centuries of history create a quietly powerful, deeply reflective atmosphere. It’s one of Vienna’s most intimate encounters with imperial legacy.

Neuer Markt: History & Significance

Neuer Markt is one of Vienna’s oldest squares, first referenced in documents in the early 13th century. Originally conceived as an extra marketplace when the old Hoher Markt became overcrowded, the square was long known as the Mehlmarkt (Flour Market) – a name reflecting its medieval role in the grain and flour trade.

As Vienna evolved, so did Neuer Markt. The square became a key civic and commercial hub during the Baroque period, reflected in its centerpiece: the Donnerbrunnen. Commissioned in 1737 and completed in 1739 by Georg Raphael Donner, the fountain is one of the finest examples of secular Baroque sculpture in Austria. It depicts allegorical representations of the Danube and its tributaries, merging mythological storytelling with a celebration of Vienna’s natural environment.

Beneath this elegant surface lies the Capuchin Crypt, an underground imperial necropolis dating back to 1618. It was built at the request of Empress Anna of Tyrol, wife of Emperor Matthias, and has since become the principal burial site of the Habsburg dynasty. Over 140 members of the royal family are entombed here, including Empress Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph I, and the legendary Empress Elisabeth (Sisi). The crypt offers a deeply human perspective on Austria’s imperial history, blending solemnity with artistic beauty.

The square underwent significant transformation in recent years. A major renovation completed in 2022 aimed to re-center the space around its historical and aesthetic value. The redesign removed surface parking and most traffic and expanded pedestrian space, producing a calmer plaza.

Today, Neuer Markt sits at the crossroads of history and refinement. Its calm presence just steps from the city’s most famous landmarks makes it ideal for travelers seeking depth beyond the guidebook staples. Whether you come for the art, the architecture, or the unexpected serenity, Neuer Markt delivers a uniquely Viennese blend of elegance, intellect, and timelessness.
