Salm Bräu: Vienna’s Classic Brewery Experience Near the Belvedere
The story of Salm Bräu begins with the long-standing tradition of brewing in Austria. The brewery occupies the former Salesian Convent building (built 1717) where the Empress’s coach horses were kept. In 1994, Salm & Co. opened a brewery-restaurant in the former convent building, beginning Salm Bräu’s current incarnation.
Salm & Co. (founded 1924 by Georg Welledits and Otto von Salm – now a family-owned business – has a long history in brewing technology. In fact, their company, Salm & Co., has been producing brewery equipment since 1924 and is now a respected global name in the brewing industry. In a full-circle twist, they decided to create a “showroom” of sorts for their equipment – by opening a brewery where it would be used to craft beer on-site, right in the middle of Vienna.

This decision gave birth to Salm Bräu in the early 1990s. It quickly earned a loyal following thanks to its dedication to traditional brewing techniques and hearty Austrian fare. But unlike many themed beer halls, Salm Bräu’s authenticity isn’t just decor-deep. Their brewing is done in the same gleaming copper tanks that are manufactured by their parent company, and the recipes are grounded in classic Austrian styles with thoughtful seasonal variation.
Over the years, it’s remained both a local favorite and a visitor discovery. Its proximity to key attractions like the Belvedere and its refusal to lean into tourist clichés make it a place of genuine experience. It’s not flashy, but that’s precisely its charm. Salm Bräu continues to represent what many travelers crave: real food, real beer, and a tangible sense of Vienna’s living history.
