Sisi Museum: The Concept Behind the CollectionText
The Sisi Museum opened in 2004 and is located within the Imperial Apartments of the Hofburg Palace in Vienna. It was established to present a historically accurate and nuanced portrait of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, commonly known as Sisi. The museum forms part of a three-part visitor experience, along with the Imperial Apartments.
Curated with the help of historians and based on original documents and personal belongings, the museum showcases over 300 objects from Elisabeth’s life. These include dresses, parasols, gloves, travel items, her famous beauty and fitness equipment, and handwritten poems. Special attention is given to her personal struggles, her unconventional lifestyle, and the contrast between her public image and private reality.

The exhibition is housed in six rooms. Through a mix of original artifacts, replicas, and multimedia displays, the museum explores Elisabeth’s upbringing in Bavaria, her marriage into the Habsburg monarchy, her resistance to court life, her travels, and her assassination in 1898.
The Sisi Museum is one of Vienna’s most visited cultural sites and a key destination for those interested in imperial history and the personal stories behind Austria’s monarchy.
