Muvamo Opinion

Brunch in Vienna is always a good idea, especially when you find a spot that combines great food with a unique atmosphere. That’s exactly what made Café Friedlich such a great find. Located on the ground floor of the Hundertwasser‑designed Kunst Haus Wien – Museum Hundertwasser (a short walk from the residential Hundertwasserhaus), the café has an artsy, laid‑back vibe that suits its imaginative surroundings. The mix of indoor and outdoor seating gave us the choice between a cozy, colorful space or a seat outside to soak in the atmosphere.

We decided to go for brunch, and we found plenty of vegetarian/vegan and lighter dishes alongside more indulgent Viennese sweets and heartier plates.

Beyond the food, what stood out was the calm and unhurried atmosphere. Although the Hundertwasserhaus area is busy with visitors, the nearby Kunst Haus Wien café and garden offer a comparatively peaceful spot to slow down and enjoy your meal.

Our Little Extras

Café Friedlich – A Café Inspired by Creativity and Quality

Café Friedlich is the leafy, color-rich café-restaurant on the ground floor of the Kunst Haus Wien – Museum Hundertwasser, just a short stroll from the residential Hundertwasserhaus – easy to enjoy both on the same visit.

Refreshed and reopened with the museum’s renovation in February 2024, the café embraces Hundertwasser’s playful, eco-minded approach: undulating floors, mosaic textures, bold color accents, and plants everywhere. Light filters through greenery into a relaxed dining area where nothing feels overly formal – more jungle hideaway than classic Ringstraße coffee house.

Café Friedlich - 1
Lush greenery surrounding the tranquil garden space at Café Friedlich.

Hundertwasser disliked straight lines and lifeless surfaces, and the building reflects that ethos. Inside the café you’ll notice shifting floor levels, irregular columns, and sprouting plant niches. Weather permitting, tables spread into a leafy courtyard garden – a beloved retreat after gallery-going or neighborhood walks.

Café Friedlich serves a regional, seasonal, sustainability‑minded menu. Expect vegetarian and vegan options alongside Viennese standbys and rotating specials that follow the market. Pastries, light lunches, and heartier plates share the menu.

Because the café opens off the Kunst Haus Wien foyer, you can combine coffee with culture: browse the museum shop’s Hundertwasser prints, books, posters, and design gifts before or after you eat. Many visitors tour the permanent Hundertwasser presentation upstairs, then unwind in the café garden.

The museum completed a major upgrade and reopened on 29 February 2024, integrating sustainability improvements (including a new energy concept) and refreshed visitor spaces. Café Friedlich’s current look, menu direction, and garden experience reflect this relaunch.
