Schmetterlinghaus: Vienna’s Butterfly Wonderland
The Schmetterlinghaus is part of Vienna’s Palmenhaus, a stunning Art Nouveau glass structure built in the early 1900s. Originally, this greenhouse was part of the Habsburg imperial gardens, used to cultivate exotic plants. Over time, it was repurposed to house a butterfly sanctuary, turning it into one of the most unique attractions in the city.
Today, the Schmetterlinghaus is home to over 400 butterflies from tropical regions. The interior is carefully designed to replicate a natural rainforest, complete with lush vegetation, small waterfalls, and a warm, humid climate.

One of the highlights is the butterfly breeding area, where visitors can observe the entire metamorphosis process, from caterpillar to butterfly. The exhibit provides a serene visitor experience and educational information about the butterfly life cycle.
Located in the Burggarten (Innere Stadt), right in the historic center, the Schmetterlinghaus remains a peaceful escape in the middle of the city.
