Schmetterlinghaus: Vienna’s Butterfly Wonderland
The Schmetterlinghaus is part of Vienna’s Palmenhaus, a stunning Art Nouveau glass structure built between 1901 and 1902. Originally, this greenhouse was part of the Habsburg imperial gardens, used to cultivate exotic plants. Over time, it was repurposed to house a butterfly sanctuary, turning it into one of the most unique attractions in the city.
Today, the Schmetterlinghaus is home to over 400 butterflies from tropical regions. The interior is carefully designed to replicate a natural rainforest, complete with lush vegetation, small waterfalls, and a warm, humid climate.

One of the highlights is the butterfly breeding area, where visitors can observe the entire metamorphosis process, from caterpillar to butterfly. The exhibit not only provides a serene environment for visitors but also helps with conservation and education about these delicate creatures.
Located just a short walk from Vienna’s historic center, the Schmetterlinghaus remains a peaceful escape in the middle of the city.
