This self-guided walk explores the elegant side of Vienna Old Town, where quiet squares open into arcaded passages and courtyards. Starting at Stephansplatz, you step off the main flow to link a string of characterful places that shaped the city’s merchant and patrician life. The route moves via Kärntner Straße to Neuer Markt and the refined calm of Josefsplatz, then into Michaelerplatz with its sweeping façade of the Hofburg. From there it turns north to the vaulted arcades of Ferstel Passage, one of the most beautiful interiors you can enjoy from the outside, and on to the twin squares of Freyung and Am Hof.

A short detour reaches Mölker Bastei, a rare remnant of the old city wall, before the walk returns through Judenplatz, a reflective historic square with cafés and bookshops tucked nearby. The final stretch threads classic Old Town shopping streets such as Bognergasse, Naglergasse and Tuchlauben, going through Petersplatz beneath the domed Peterskirche and back to the start to complete the loop.

Expect refined architecture, soft light under arcades, and frequent photo moments. The focus is entirely outdoors, ideal for travelers who want atmosphere and texture rather than museum time. Plan around 2 hours at a relaxed pace, with plenty of opportunities to pause for coffee along the way.

The route starts and ends in front of the St. Stephen’s Cathedral at the exit of subway station Stephansplatz (U1/U3) and is easily reachable via public transport.

3. Neuer Markt

5. Josefsplatz – Prunksaal

Josefsplatz is a quiet square in central Vienna, slightly removed from the busier areas nearby. The Augustinian Church and the Hofburg buildings line the square, with an equestrian statue placed at the center. Every part of the layout is precise, and the space is kept clean and orderly. Continue along Augustinerstraße and through the arch toward the Stallburg courtyard.

12. Palais Kinsky

13. Mölker Steig

A narrow, ivy edged stair that climbs to Mölker Bastei, one of the last visible curves of Vienna’s old city walls. At the top, the quiet lane bends past Beethoven’s Pasqualatihaus and offers atmospheric angles of lanterns, cobbles, and façades.

After exploring, descend the way back to Freyung and continue one block south to Am Hof.

14. Am Hof

Broad and open, Am Hof has long been a setting for public life in Vienna. The surrounding façades reflect the city’s mix of religious and commercial influence over the centuries.
